Why We Recommend This Experience
At the heart of our Travel Building Blocks is a commitment to discovering the places that locals cherish but many visitors overlook.
While most travelers know Dali for Erhai Lake and the Ancient Town, the countryside of Eryuan and Dengchuan offers a completely different perspective—one shaped by farming traditions, lakeside communities, local craftsmanship, and a slower rhythm of life.
This experience is not about checking off famous landmarks. It is about spending a day immersed in the landscapes and traditions that have sustained local communities for generations.
From the making of Rushan, Dali's iconic milk delicacy, to quiet waterways lined with white-walled villages, this journey reveals the everyday beauty of rural Dali.
We recommend this experience for travelers who want to go beyond the postcard and experience the authentic countryside of western Yunnan.
A Journey Through Dali's Living Countryside
This full-day countryside experience takes you into the fertile plains and lakeside communities north of Dali, where traditional ways of life continue alongside breathtaking natural scenery.
The day begins in Dengchuan, a region famous throughout Yunnan for its dairy traditions. Visit a local Rushan workshop to learn about the production process behind one of the Bai people's most distinctive foods. Taste fresh dairy products, sample local milk specialties, and, if timing allows, witness the fascinating process of making fresh Rushan by hand.
From here, continue through a landscape of villages, farmlands, and country paths. Walking through fields and local settlements offers a glimpse into the rhythms of rural life that have remained largely unchanged for generations.
The journey continues into a historic Muslim village, where old architecture, local traditions, and the sounds of daily life create a unique cultural atmosphere rarely experienced by outside visitors.
Later, board a small boat and explore the peaceful waterways that weave through the countryside. As you drift along the canals, admire traditional white-walled villages reflected in the water, with distant mountains forming the backdrop.
The day concludes with two of life's simple pleasures: a relaxing hot spring bath and a delicious local meal, featuring either traditional Eryuan countryside cuisine or local halal specialties.
This is Dali at its most peaceful, authentic, and unexpectedly beautiful.

Some of the most memorable moments in Dali are not found at famous viewpoints.
They are found in a village lane at sunset, in the aroma of fresh milk being prepared, in quiet waterways reflecting white-walled homes, and in conversations that unfold far from the crowds.
This experience is an invitation to slow down and discover the countryside that continues to nourish the culture, traditions, and everyday life of Dali.
